The BUET-Japan Institute of Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety (BUET-JIDPUS) was established by the Syndicate of BUET on 30 December, 2009 as a development project of the Government of Bangladesh with the financial support from the Government of Japan.The purpose of the institute is to provide a platform for teaching, learning and research in the field of disaster prevention and urban safety that will contribute to reduce disaster risk of the country. The aim of this institute is to assist the government of Bangladesh to strengthen and maintain the infrastructures all over the country and to prevent and well manage natural disasters.

Aims of BUET-JIDPUS

To strengthen the capacity of professionals in the field of disaster risk reduction, infrastructure management and structural health monitoring.

To strengthen other local agencies on the above-mentioned fields through training.

To promote disaster reduction by disseminating information and knowledge.

To promote collaboration with other national and international universities & research organizations.

To conduct research, testing and consultancy services.

Administration & Management

The administration and management of the institute is vested on a Board of governors (BOG) having the Vice-Chancellor as the Chairman. Research and Academic Committee (RAC) consisting the Director, all Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors and other members as described in the rules and regulation of BUET-JIDPUS has the responsibility of monitoring the academic, research and training programs.

Academic & Research Activities

BUET-JIDPUS is currently offering three post-graduate degrees in the form of masters of science and masters of engineering (M.Sc./M.Engg) in the field of disaster risk reduction. These programs provide students with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and practical training to address the complex challenges posed by disasters.
One of the key strengths of BUET-JIDPUS lies in its research endeavours. The institute has undertaken numerous research projects and consultancy works that have garnered recognition. BUET-JIDPUS actively collaborates with a wide range of national and international organizations in research activities. These collaborations enable the institute to leverage diverse expertise, resources, and networks to address the complex challenges of disaster risk reduction.

BUET-JIDPUS arranged a Seminar titled “Seismic Assessment Concept and Visual Rating Method for Prioritization of Detailed Evaluation of RC Building”

with key speakers Md. Rafiqul Islam, Superintending Engineer of PWD Design Circle-1, Dhaka, and Md. Shafiul Islam, PhD, Senior Research Engineer at Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI), Dhaka.

BUET-JIDPUS arranged a Seminar on 7 October, 2023 titled “Urban Resilience: An Approach to be Embedded in Planning and Designing of Built Environment”

with key speaker, Dr. Ishrat Islam, Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at BUET and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning, BUET.

BUET-JIDPUS showcased a poster at the “RISE Internal Research Grant Awarding and Research Exhibit Program”

 

hosted by the Research and Innovation Centre for Science and Engineering (RISE) at BUET. The poster featured the ongoing research project titled “Earthquake Early Warning System in Bangladesh.”
