CONFERENCE CHAIR

Professor Dr. Saiful Islam

Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam joined as the Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka on 23 June, 2016. After receiving B.Sc. Eng. (Electrical) and M.Sc. Eng. (Electrical) degree from BUET, he received PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Cambridge University (UK) in 1986. Prof. Dr. Saiful Islam has 43 years of teaching, research and university administration experience to his credit.

He is the Former Pro-VC, Primeasia University, Banani, Dhaka; Dean, EEE Faculty, BUET; Dean, Engineering Faculty, AIUB; Head, EEE Department, BUET; Head, Computer Science and Engineering Department BUET and Visiting Professor, IUT. He has significant contribution in University level Engineering Education especially Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE) and Electronic and Communications Engineering (ECE).

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Dr. Ainun Nishat

Professor Emeritus, Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research, BRAC University.

He is recognized as a pioneering expert of water resource management and climate change in Bangladesh. He finished his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, U.K. in 1981. He has a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from BUET, 1975. He is a key member of the Climate Change Negotiation Team for Bangladesh and represented Bangladesh at the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (CoP) since Bali, Indonesia at CoP 1.


Professor Dr. Kazuo Konagai

Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo; Principal Researcher, International Consortium on Landslides (Home).

At the end of his PhD studies, he continued his research at the Nagaoka University of Technology for two years as a Research Assistant before taking up a research and teaching post as an Associate Professor at the same university in 1981. His primary research interests include soil dynamics, seismic waves, dynamic soil-pile interaction and hazard analysis.


Professor Dr. Kimiro Meguro

Professor, Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo; Director, International Center for Urban Safety Engineering (ICUS) and Team Leader, Create and Operationalize Urban Resilience Unit within RAJUK.

After receiving his Ph. D. degree from the University of Tokyo in 1991, he joined IIS. Dr. Meguro has wide range of research field in disaster management and urban safety from structural to non-structural measures. As a specialist of numerical simulation, he has developed several new models by which total behavior of structures and/or materials from a sound state to a complete discrete state can be simulated.


Mr. Patrick Coulombel

Architect, General Manager - Technical Director, General Manager - Technical department Architectes de l'urgence. Architect DPLG in 1991, he is co-founder of the Architects of Emergency Foundation.


Dr. J.W.F Erik Wiersma

Dr. Erik Wiersma is a former Assistant Professor of Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. He is also the Co-founder and Safety Expert of Fair Production, Netherlands, which has the mission to improve labor conditions in fashion producing factories in the Global South by providing training and advise on safety and sustainability. Currently Dr. Erik Wiersma is working on safety issues of RMG sector of Bangladesh as a Research Fellow of BUET-JIDPUS. He was involved in the curriculum development process of an educational programme offered by BUET-JIDPUS on "Safety Management".


INVITED SPEAKERS

Professor Dr. Stefano Tsukamoto

Professor, Osaka University and Deputy Director of Global Risk Solutions Center (GRSC). He is the leader of Osaka University Satellite Project on Disaster Management and Humanitarian Action at Gadjah Mada University. Mr. Tsukamoto has expansive experience in crisis management, humanitarian aid, and disaster management as practitioner as well as academic staff.


Dr. Deepak Chamlagain

Assistant Professor, Department of Geology, Tri-Chandra M. Campus, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He is the author of two books on Gorkha earthquake (2015) in Nepal giving details of response activities documenting number of lessons. His research interests include Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Engineering Geology and Paleo Seismology.




In the session, there will be other keynote and invited speakers from Bangladesh.
